"COLD BLOODED PERJURY."

IN A MAINTENANCE CASE. AUCKLAND, 12th August. Frank Trembath was charged at the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. Kettle, S.M., with failing to pay arrears on an order for support of his child. In the course of his evidence defendant stated he had bought a 15s postal order from the post office at Onehunga- that morning, and had posted it to the Clerk of the Court. The case was then adjourned until the afternoon, when the hearing was resumed. Defendant repeated his statement, and signed a document to the effect that it was true. The postal note had not, however, been received by the clerk. "Do you still say that you told the truth about the postal note?" asked his Worship. Witness (after some hesitation) : • No, it is a lie. Mr. Kettls stated he felt all along that defendant had been rying, and added that he did not know how he could nave stood there and committed such cold-blooded perjury. He was not sore whether he^ should not direct a prosecution against defendant. He ordered him to pay the amount of arrears, and in default, he would have to undergo one month's imprisonment. Defendant was also ordered to find securities for due compliance with the order.
