DISTRESS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I have been wondering! if any thing can ba done to lighten the burden of "A Native of New Zealand," who wrote to the Evening Post of 21bt July. She is helping to solve the population problem under very adverse circumstances, and I suppose the legislation promised by Sir Joseph Ward will not be in time to do her any good. If you, sir, would take charge of a list, I expect there* are many women, who like myself, can only afford a little, but would be only too glad to help, I should be very pleaded to send you 5s for the purpose. — I am, etc., J.B. [We have ascertained the facts of this ease, and they are distressing. Some four years ago the husband .was injured while working on the lailway lino not far from Wellington, and has ever since been unfit for arduous work. The local county council at present allows the family 12s 6d a week. There are fcix young children and some three weeks hence a seventh will, in all human probability, be added to the flock. The family re&ide in a district where medical or nursing aid ib expensive, while in the ordinary sense they are without any home comforts, indeed, it is almost certain that the children are nob properly nourished. We willingly adopt the suggestion of our correspondent, and will receive aaid acknowledge through the Post any subscription that may be forwarded to us. Further, we have provided for the proper bestowal of the money in regular instalments, if considered advisable.]
