HABITUAL CRIMINALS.
REV. E. C. SUDD'S COMMENTS CRITICISED. Two days ago tho Rev. E. C. Bndd, of Auckland, gaol chaplain, declared that the Act relating to habitual criminals was being amended most unsatisfactorily, and that "habituals" received no reformatory treatment whatever, and that the release of habituals depended, not upon reformation, but itpor then importunity and outside influence, and a promise to leave the Dominion. These statements the Hon. Dy. Findlay (Minister of Justice)' describes as grossly inaccurate and unfortunately misleading. No "habitual," he points out, can be released except on the recommendation of a Judge of the Supreme Court. Consequently Mr. Budd's references implied a stigma on the Supreme Court Bench. As far as he knew, only three "hakituala" had so far been released. The suggestions made were wholly and recklessly inaccurate. COLDS IN AUGUST. GUARD AGAINST THEM BY TAKING TUSSICUKA.
