COLLEGE SOCIETY'S DEBATE.
About forty people attended at Vie-, toria College on Saturday evening on the occasion of the college society s fort-i lightly debate. Mr. W. J. M'Eldowney' presided. Mr. H. :E. Evans, 8.A./ LL.B., seconded by Mr. E. Rutherfurd, moved, "That the House of Lords was justified in rejecting the -Budget." This was opposed by Mr. D. S. Smith, LL.B.,i seconded by Mr. C. H. Taylor, M.A. Ten subsequent speakers contributed to the discussion, at the conclusion of' which a vote on the motion resulted in its being carried by 11 votes to 6 (the voters comprising only member* of the society). "Mr. A. R. Atkinson, who was present as judge, placed the first five speakers in the following order of merit : —Messrs. D. S. Smith, 'M. H. Pram. R. G. Butcher, C. H. Taylor, and" _. 'Rufchorfurd. TPhe judge ,also gave -some instructive advice as to the best means of achieving effective debating qualities.
