RIOTOUS SCENE AT A WEDDING.

THE GOULD-DREXEL UNION. | . A saturnalia of vulgarity and unshamed curiosity marked the recent marriage in New York of Miss Marjorie Gwynn Gould, daughter of George J. Gould, with Anthony J. -Drexel, juri. (writes the American ' correspondent of the Melbourne Age). Regardless of pouring Tain, frantic mdbs of women fought the police with fists and umbrellas to -force their way through the lines. Some 'of them succeeded, too, and it was .necessary to 'Send in -a. call to headquarters for reserves to quell the struggling ■anass of women. Mounted men hurried to the scene, and the disgraceful rioting was terminated. Not since the nuptials of- May • Goelet and the Duke of Roxburgh in New York five years ago hsis such^hysteria and wild disorder characterised a wedding. Indeed, this <is the first occasion upon which a vulgai* exhibition of this nature has occurred at a marriage between Americans. -It .is stated as .a .kind of excuse that "the mob was made up chiefly of foreigners." It was not only ■the -burning desire of women to catch a glimpse of the .bride that occasioned the ' rioting. Two hours before the wedding the church was stormed by women, and before the police aTrived blossoms were plucked and vines and ferns torn down in the rush for souvenirs. The bride is a strikingly beautiful woman, but from -another point of view the wedding is one of considerable interest, inasmuch *as it brings together two of the wealthiest families of America. Miss Gould is a. daughter of the leading living representative of the powerful Gould family, while Dre-xel is the ,son of an immensely wealthy Philadelphia banker and investor. Satisfaction is expressed that the young heiress did not follow thb example of scma'ny other rich American girls and maTry a titled European. No expense was considered in decorating the church for the ma-rri-age ceremony. Some • 2000 calla lilies, besides masses of boughs of apple blossoms, daisies, and other flowers, were banked on th© altar and elsewhere in ' the church. The wedding presents were displayed •at the Gould -home in Fifth-avenue. Various estimates weTe made of their value*, some as high as £400,000. A •force of i detectives stood on guard all day over the presents. Miss Margareta Drexel, sister of the bridegroom, is engaged to marry Viscount Maidstone, 'and their .marriage will take place in London during June. The honeymoon plans of Anthony Drexel and his wife have been- kept a secret, but it is known they -will -attend the wedding of Miss 1 Drexel and Viscount Maidstone. j
