AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

MEETING OP NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. At a meeting of the Council of the Ne-w Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last evening an invitation to send a New Zealand team to compete in the ten-miles Australasian cross-country championship was received from the Tasmanian A.A.A. The race is to be run at Glenorchy on 3rd September next. Tha committee decided that the finances of the council would not allow of a team being sent, but that the various centres be acquainted with the fixture and asked if they would assist in financing a team to be sent. The Southland Centre wrote stating that the- New Zealand Cross-country championship would be held on 7th September at Invercargill. In answer to an enquiry from the. New Zealand Boxing Association, as to. whether a person taking part in a woodchopping competition forfeited his amateur status, the council expressed the opinion that, if the contest was for pecuniary gain, the competitor could not engage in amateur sports. This was followed by Mr. Davies giving notice of motion that wood-chopping be added to the list of athletic exercises recognised by the association. An application Jrorn the Auckland Centre to have D. Wilson's time for the three-mile walk (20min sSsec) passed as the New Zealand record, was refused, as the application had not been made within 60 days of the event. A sub-committee was set up to report on a proposal for reciprocity with the League of New Zealand in 'the matter of disqualifications.
