The Austrian-Lloyd steamer Trieste, which arrived here from Aden, after being long overdue, broke her propellershaft on 16th June, when 400 miles from Aden. Awnings were improvised as sails, and a distance of 900 miles was sailed until the collier Lowther Range was sighted. During the next six days heroic efforts were made to tow the disabled ship, terrible weather prevailing. The Lowther Range's second engineer was drowned, and nine of her crew injured as the result of a steel hawser, attached to the Trieste, snapping when towing began. Meanwhile provisions were scarce, and tne cargo was broached, macaroni and raisins being consumed. Heavy £eas broke the hawser when the vessels were near Bombay, and the Trieste was towed into the harbour with great difficulty.
