NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph!) (From Sir Bedivere.) HAWERA, 12th May. There was another dull day for the • conclusion "of the meeting. No rain fell, however, until we were leaving for home, when a light mist drifted up from xhe southward. There was again a good' atterldarice, and, taking it all in all, the meeting may be saijd to have been the mo.-st successful held, at this time of the year at Hawera. As on the opening day, Mr. O'Connor was in great form, and 'big fields were the rule rather than tiie exception. Only two favourites scored, and, generally speaking, winners were- again hard to find. Had the public been afforded greater facilities for making their investments, the increase in totalizator figures could have been considerably larger, for a Ibt of money was shut out in connection with more than one event. Par,itutu's presence in the Manawapau Hurdles gave the race, additional interest, and the old Castor gelding's appearance in the weighing enclosure was eagerly awaited. Although the majority of backers fancied hie chance, Keen critics would have none of him. Tire faofc was he was carrying -a superabundance of flesh, so much so, indeed, that his trainer will have all his work cut out to get him fit by 3rd June. Maharanui is also, if in a lesser degree, backward, and Waitapu, who is susceptible o-f improvement, js a heavier horse than ho had previously been 'this season. Though Puritntu was favourite, Maliaraliui and- Waitapu wece each well sup^ ported, and a good race was generally' expected. So, too, it proved. Pari* tutu led over the first fence from Beeline,, who, however, quickly retired. Loch Guard showed out, and led up the back btretch fiom Waitapu, Nero, an 4 Pantutu. Half a mile from home Loch Guard retired beaten,' and Paritutu -was in difficulties. Nero then shot .to the I'ront, but Wailapu -and Maharanui challenged at . the home turn," and a great- race home resulted in a win' for '.Vaitapu by a head. Maharanui was a length and a half away third, and Paritutu fourth. Patrobus and Beacon were in chief demand for the Boraugh Handicap, the start for* which was delayed through the vagaries of Tiraumea, a miniature" halfsister to Oracle. With a furlong gone, Beacon was well out in front with Kanewara and Plantation as his nearest attendants, whilst Patrobus was a long way back. Turning for home Beacon looked all over a winner, but Gray gave Plantation his head inside the distance and the race was then all" over. The Sylvia Park gelding overhauled Beacon in a few strides, and wqli vei'y easily by a, length. Patrobus .was placed 'third, but many people thought lie finished about fifth, and that Shining Star followed the first two home. Stourlon, who looked all the better for, his exertions on the previous day, was" a good favoni'itß for the Shorts, and, after being handy throughout, be v won ys he pleased'- by a length and a half. This well-bred colt has every appearance of being a good* one. He is an immensely big 'three-year-old, and should prove" capable of holding his own in better company than Tie met to-day. The Manaia Handicap was a particularly good betting race, a.«, though Mulga Bill had a slight call, each o£ the, others with the exception of Tarn Glen and | Compass were, very evenly supported. As usual Mulga Bill was responsible for setting the pace, and with Clemora and Research as his nearest attendants, he 1-sd into the straight. Before the disi tantfe post was reached, however, he was done with. Golden Eagle, who had been lying fourth, then pnMn her claim, and catching Clemora a hundred yards from home, bhe ran in a very comfortable winner by three lengths. Mulga, Bill was fourth. Odds were laid on Attention's ability to beat her mod-srate opponents in the Xgamutu Handicap, and when it -was b-eon that she had got fairly well away her feuppoi-lei's. were on the best oi terms with themselves. Xheu confidence, however, was hadly misplaced, as after drop- 1 ping back fourth at- the top turn, Advance's daughter nev«r looked dangerous, and' a rank, outsider .in Miss Alba, who t was in front three furlongs from home, never gay« anything a chance to get on terms and won- very easily by two [• lengths. Ambrosian was fourth. I Backers were very undecided as to. the correct pea for th* .Corinthian Handicap, p Dut eventually Reumac was selected. He j was in trouble, a- long way from home, I however, and the race was really a duel between Envoy and Te Whetu, who were practically on trms throughout. At the - distance the latter looked to have the Dest of things, but Envoy outstayed him, ' and won hard ridden by a bare length. Howler was handled in anything but a satisfactory manner. After lying a long way back he came with a great rattle over the last quarter and at the finish he was only three quarters of a length away third. With Stourton and Sandy Paul out of the way the concluding event looked at the mercy of Hinekorangi. All sorts of rumours were afloat as to the capabilities of a gelding by Uhlan from Silver Star called Silver Fox, who was supposed to have cleared out from his stable mate Plantation in a trial. Hector Gray was up, and the "dark 'an" was prompt ly backed down from long to fairly short odds. The- reputation he had established in private, however, was soon lost. He got- well away but was quitr unable to foot it with Hin-ekorangL who crocked her field up, and lasted long 'enough to get home by a length. Stai board was fourth, and on returning to scale his rider Pearce lodged ? complaint against Jenkins, who, be alkged, had struck -him

over the head with his whip. The stewards were called together and fined Jenkins £10. WANGANUI WEIGHTS. [BY TEtJEGRAPH — PBJ2SS ASSOCIATION.] HAWERA, 12th May.
