A Press Association telegram from Pahiatua received late this afternoon states that there are no fresh developments ia connection with the pursuit of the escaped prisoner Powelka. When he was seen last evening near the. Pahiatua ra'lway station he had just been to tho store to buy fuse, but could obtain none, and rodo away. When across the railway line ho was seen by Constable King, of Palmers ton, who was on patrol. King states that Powelka, hearing the sound of hoofs, turned round. Although it was growing dusk, King immediately recognised him. He was wearing a green hat, green overcoat, and new leggings — lost From one of the Palmerston fires. Powelka's hor*e was a speedy animal, and gained on King, but it became footsore, as it wanted two nhoes, and went slightly lame. King then decreased the distance between them. Powolka, seeing it was hopeless to continue to ride, took advantage of the cover of a bend in theroad to dismount, abandon the horse, and clear up tho hill in tho direction of Matthew's Bu*h. Coming up, King saw Powelka, revolver in 'hand, running to- [ wards the bu«h. Tho constable fired twice, but failed to hit Powelka, who ran into the bush and wan lost in tha darkness. Then assistance was summoned, tho bush surrounded, and searched at daybreak without avail. About forty constables are engaged in the search at present, and more arc hourly expected. It is probable the Tararua ranges will bo tho scene of patrol to-day. An application by the Wellington Hospital Board for the construction of a sewer connecting the new fever hospital with the main sewers was granted by the City Council last evening on the understand ing that the expenso Fhoiild be borne by the hospital authorities.
