THE SEARCH FOR POWELKA. SEEN AT ASH HURST. [BT TELEGRAPH— PBISS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON N., This Day. Joseph Powelka was seen at Aehhurst this morning. It was discovered that he had been in bis mother-in-law's house, which is situated in a lonely part of Ashhurst. In consequence of threat* alleged to have been .made by Powelka, Mrs. Wikon and her daughter (Mrs. Powelka) bad been sleeping at one of th* ■hotels in town. On returning to the house this morning, at 9.30, Mrs. Wilson •was confronted by Powelka, who exclaimed: "Oh! mother," and while Mrs. Wilson rushed screaming from thehou6e the fugitive bolted away towards the ; river, where there is plenty of shelter. SWAGGER SAID~TO HAVE BEEN SEEN ABOUT. PALMERSTON, Bth April. The firebell rang out jvsb before 11 o'clock last night. The fire proved to be at Mr. Snow's late residence, Hokowhitu, recently purchased by Mr. Hildas Bergersen, but at present unoccupied. It was a commodious residence. It .was burned to the ground. A swagger was said to have been seen there this afternoon. It is possible to ford the Manawatu River near Mr. Snow's house, and a man returning from Fahiatua hills could cross there to avoid bridges. A large force of police are out in town and on the ranges. The fact that a man supposed to be Powelka sought to purchase a fuse at Pahi&taa is considered significant, seeing it is alleged he took detonators, etc., from a Palm erston store ou the night of tho fire. £50 REWARD. The Government has decided to offer ft reward of £50 to any one»who.is able to furnish information which will lead to the arrest of Powelka. Detective Caesells, of Wellington, has jeen appointed to take charge of the search for the escapee, and left for the scene of operationsthis morning.
