RUGBY FOOTBALL.

On Saturday the Rugby Union are promoting a seven -a -side tournament, as a preliminary prior to the opening of the Cup matches on the 16th. Last season a similar competition was held, and a very good afternoon's sport was witnessed. This season there are sixteen teams entered in the senior grade, including one each from the colleges, -nd eight teams in the fifth grade, making in all twenty-two games to be played. For the opening of the season the principal games are : — Athletic v. Oriental (at the Athletic Park), Hutt v. Old Boys, Poneke v. Victoria College, St. James v. Southern, Petone v. Wellington, Melrose drawing a bye.
