AUCKLAND'S HARBOUR BOARD'S AFFAIRS.

THE QUESTION OF A ROYAL COMMISSION. tSX TZtEGBAPH — SPECIAL TO THI POST.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Hon. R. M'Kenzie, Minister for Public Works, on being asked whether the Government had any intention of setting up a Royal Commission of Enquiry in regard to Auckland Harbour Board affairs, more particularly with reference to the wall which collapsed at the Freeman's Bay reclamation works recently, tho Minister ridiculed any idea of such a thing, and said that he had been misrepresented in the statements attributed to him. If there was anything to prove that the original plan? approved by Order in-Council had not been followed out, the position might be seriouss, but that was entirely a matter for legal experts to decide, and ho had had no legal opinion upon tho object. As far as the question of a Royal Commision was concerned, he could only say that he had heard nothing of any such proposal, and that in any case he considered it would be highly improper for tho Government to interfere in the administration of any loca! body. The matter did not in any way concern the Public Works Department, and even the Order-in-Council referred to was issued Irom the Marine Department.
