HAINING-STREET RAID.

As the result of a raid by Sergeant Rutledge and Constable M'Keh j on a house in Haining-street lnst night, & Chinese named Chin Ah Leong appeared before Mr. \V. R. Haseldcn, S.M., in the Magistrate* Court to-day, charged with smoking opium, and Mith having opium in his possession in a form suitable for smoking. On the application of Mr Fitzgibbon, who said that he bad beeu just instructed to appear fur the defence, tho case wa» allowed to stand down until this afternoon. On resuming, evidence was called. Sergeant Uutledge stated that at about 8.40 oYUmk lu*t nijjht \\f and Constable M'Kclvie went into Frederick ttreet and scrambled over three high fence* and into accused's yurd, No. 29, Hainingttreet, and vuited until a Chinese came out of the house. They caught him and passed into the houso and into a room where accused was lying on a bed smoking lie was leaning over a lamp with a pipe in his left hand, and a needle with opium on it in the right hand. On seeing the constable he sprung up. After taking possession of the Mucking paraphernalia, witness became suspicious of accused's movements. He was searched, »nd a quantity of dry opium was found in hi« waistcoat pocket and a small tin of opium was discovered in his shoe. There was another Chinese in the room. For the offence — smoking opium — accused was fined £1, in default one month's imprisonment, and for being found with it in his possession an additional fine of £10 was imposed. In the latter case the alternative wns two months' imprisonment. The costs totalled £1 15..

At a meeting of Miramar residents and ratepayer held this afternoon, Mr. Frederick Townsend affirmed his intention to stand for the Mayoralty of Miramar. A committee, of which Mr. D. K. Blair is the chairman, has been formed to support Mr. Townsuntl's candidature. Mr. Townsend will address the elector* at the Kiosk, Worser Bay, on Monday evening. An enjoyable social evening was spent by a gathering of tailway employees at the Lambton Raihvny Reading Room last night when a presentation wan made to Mr. J. A. Dimoncl, who has left the service after 28 years' service. Mr. A. Cossie (Thorndon Railway) presided, und there was a large attendance. In proposing the (oast o? tho "Guw-t" Mr. Mattin Lee spoke of the high estorni Mr. Dimond wax held in by the members ot the service, and the travelling public. Mr. D. Skinner and others nlso spoke in bipli term* of Mr. Dimond's good qualities. After the toast had been musically honoured Mr. Caseie presented Mr. Dimorxl with a purse of sovereigns and a handFome gold medallion suitably inscribed as a token of eMeem and friendship.
