NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. QUARTERLY COUNCIL MEETING. The quarterly council meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association was held last evening in the office of the hon. Becretary, Mr. A. G. Fell, 9, King's Chamber-". The following delegates were present : — Messr». B. B. Allen (Auckland), A. I. Littlejohn (Rangitikei), J. Milesi 'Wellington Workingmen's Club), A. G. Fell (Canterbury C.C.), and F. K. Kelling (Auckland Workingmen» Club and Wangunui). Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messr*. J. G. W. Dalrymplo (Wellington Workingmeifs Club), D. S. Coliimb (Otago), and E. W. Pctherick (Wellington) The correapondence related mainly to the championship congress held in Auckland during the Christmas and New Year holidays, in connection with which the hon. secretary to the congress (Mr. R. Uarendfl) submitted a balance-sheet, showing that the /expenditure just, balanced the receipts. Several club* wrote acknowledging receipt of the chess badge* kindly presented by Mr. E. W. Petherick, of Wellington (one of the North Island vice-presidents), whose generosity in the matter is very widely appreciated. The hon. treasurer reported that since the December meeting he had received a further donation from Mr. Petherick, and subscriptions from the three following clubs, viz. : Auckland Workingmen's Club, Rangitikei C.C., Wellington C.C., and Wellington Workingmen's Club. A reminder has been sent to the only cluo whose subscription for the curient year is outstanding. The finances show a balance on the right side. The newly-formed Masterton Chess Club wrote applying for affiliation, and nominating Mr. S. Mackay as its delegate. The club wn» unanimously admitted to membership on the motion* of Mr. Littlejohn. The Canterbury Club wrote notifying that two of its three representatives on the Adjudication Board were not now members, viz., Messrs. Poupard and W. S. King. It was accordingly decided to nsk the Canterbury C.C. to submit two fresh names to complete their quota on the board. Mr. J. A. Gonnell wrote stating that he would bo unable to represent the Gisborne C.C. ' in future, as he is not now living m or near Wellington. It was decided to ask the club to nominate a successor. Alternative estimates were Teceived in connection with the proposal to present engraved ceitificates in future to prizewinners at the annual championship congress, viz., for printing off copper-plate or by letterpress. It was decide^ to obtain n. full-sized sketch and an estimate of cost of printing direct from the plate. Monday, the 16th proximo (Whit Monday) was fixed on as the dato of tho annual general meeting, and clubs will therefore have to send in nominations promptly for the offlcos of patron, president, vice-presidents, etc., in order to comply with tlw requirements of the association's rule*. A hearty vote of thanks to tho two Auckland Chess Clubs and their officials for their excellent arrangements in connection with, and able carrying out of, the recent championship congress, was passed with great heart iness. A vote of thank/* to Mr. Allen for presiding terminated the meeting.
