OFF GERMAN NEW GUINEA. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. BRISBANE, 4th April.. The German surveying steamer Planet, taking soundings off German New Guinea, obtained a depth of 20,700 ft, the fourth deepest sounding in tb». world. The greatest depth hitherto recorded is 27.930 ft, in the North Pacific, east of Japan ; the Challenger, in 1875, sounded in 27,470 ft, also in the North. Pacific, north-west of the Caroline Islands. In the South Pacific a- depth of 25,568 ft has been found, south of the Friendly Islands, and 25,020 ft off the west coast of Chili. In the Atlantic the greatest dopth is 27,366 ft, off Porto Rico, West Indies. Ross records a sounding in the Antarctic Ocean where lie found no bottom at 24,000 ft. By far the larger portion of the sea-floor lies between the depths of 6000 ft and 16,000 ft.
