MUSICAL UNION.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Wellington Musical Union was held last evening ; Mr. J. W. Joynt (president) occupied tho chair. The committee reported that during the past year the union devoted a considerable amount of its time to centenary commemorations of the birth of Mendelssohn and the death of Haydn, both of which ovents occurred m 1809. Mendelssohn was commemorated by what was generally admitted to have been an exceptionally wood performance of his oratorio "Elijah" ; and by a miscellaneous programme, which included the "Midsumer Night's Dream" overture, a portion of the Scotch symphony, several unaccompanied part-songs, and the pianoforte concerto in G-minor, with Mrs. E. D. Cachemailje at the solo instrument. ; Haydn's representative oratorio "The Creation" was given at the fourth subscription concert. Cowen's graceful work, "The Sleeping Beauty," was also given. . The balance-sheet showed that there ! was a small profit on the actual year's operations, but there was still a considerable outstanding liability, against ivhich there were a number of outstanding subscriptions. In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman remarked that it had been said that there was not room in Wellington for two societies. He thought there was plenty of room for two.
