CORRESPONDENCE.

SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Is it true that there is a shortage of trucks for the traffic on the Hutt railway occasioned by the fact that trucks which should be available are lying idle with awnings ovor thoir wide. In waiting for the race meeting, when they could be earning in the meantime £2 12s 6d per day. If they are three weeks idle the department loses about £50 per tiuck in freights without counting inconvenience to traders, and it will probably cost 10« a truck to shift the peats and t-eplace them when wanted. If it is true it is another example of the great business ability of the Government. No one of course expects it from tho Railway Department.—l am, etc.. F. Wellington, ls-t April, 1910. [On enquiry from the Railway Department to-day it was ascertained that cinte the 16th March, with the exception of two days junt before Easter there has been no shortage of wagons on the Hutt line. Of the 70 seated wagons , which were fitted up for the holiday traffic, 40 have been dismantled, and 30 are held in readiness for the Trentham races on Wednesday next. It cost* about £1 to fit up the trncks and 16s to dismantle them.]
