Spence, a well-known writer on social and political subjects ) aged 84 years. Catherine Helen Spence, authoress, litterateur, president of the Effective Voting League of South Australia, and vice-president of tho National Council of Women, was born in Melrose, Scotland, and arrived in South Australia with her parents in 1839. Since 1869 th« main object of her life has been electoral reform — the Hare system of proportional representation or etttttive voting — in which cause slie lectured throughout South Australia and other ; SUtes t and delivered about 100 lectures 111 the United States and Canada.
