H.M.S. Pioneer, carrying tho letter portion of this week's English mail, arrived at Auckland from Sydney ftt 12.15 p.m. to-day. The Southern portion of the mail is due at Wellington with the Main Trunk express on Monday afternoon. The arrangements for the literary and musical competitions, to be held in Christchurch, are now well in hand. The competitions will be held in His Majesty's Theatre, commencing on 17th May, and will continue daily until 27th May. Tho secretary reports that a large number of entries arc now coming to hand, and the character recitals and dialogues introduced for the first time in New Zealand, aro being well supported. The choral contest will also be a success, as in addition to local choirs, three choirs from outside Christchurch, will compete. Competitors are requested to note that no entries will be received after 11th April. Any information required will be forwarded on application to the secretary, Mr. G. W. Jenncr, Christchurch. Regarding next week's practice of the Wellington Musical Union, owing to the Sydney-street Hall being otherwise engaged, the usual practice will be held in tho Methodist Schoolroom, opposite, at 7.30 p.m. At 8.30 the annual meeting of the union will be held, when the report and balance-sheet for the season 1909 will be submitted, and the election of officers for season 1910 will take place. Every member, both active and honorary, is asked to attend. Customs dues at Wellington for the week ending to-day reached a total of £12,426 9s 6d. Beer duty yielded £205 4s. For the two days Friday and Saturday the revenue was £3472 12s 3d, beer duty being £176 14s. The Council of tho Northern Bowling Association will meet at the Wellington Olnb's pavilion on Friday next to appoint a secretary in place of Mr. J. H. Mentiplay, who recently resigned, and also a vice-president. \ A deputation from the Ratepayers' Associations of Roseneath and Hataitai waited on the Hataitai Land Company yesterday with reference to the acquisition by the corporation of block 8 of the company's estate, comprising some thirteen acres, for a sport* ground for the district. Further entertainment is offered by the science students, who are showing chemical and electrical experiments, together with biological and geological specimen!!. Tho Rev. W. Jollie, 8.A., Unitarian minister, of Auckland, is to conduct tho services at the Unitarian Church hero for the next three Sunday.
