RUBBER,

AN EXCITED MARKET. By Telegraph. — Tress Association.— Copyr/snt. (Received April 2, 10 a.m.) LONDON, Ist April. At the rubber auctions, 11s 6d per Ib. was realised. There have been exciting scenes on tho sharemarket. As speculations, rubber shaves seem to bid fair to far exceed gold mining shares. There has been for some months past intense excitement in \he London rubber sharemarket. It was only six weeks ago that lubber sold in Mincing Lane at 8s o|d per pound for both spot and forward supplies. An estimate of Brazalian trees is 91b. to IOHj. of rubber per annum, and the total cost of production in the case of a typical plantation is 2s 3d per lb., which with rubber at Bs, would leave a profit of 5s 9d per lb. The prqfit for the Malay Peninsula plantations is estimated at 2s 6d per lb. In the Malay Peninsula alone there were 128 companies on 14th February last. In South America, their name is legion. And Papua is now being exploited. It is not undkely that there will be a rubber boom in some of the Pacific Islands, although there are large plantations in both Fiji and German Samoa.
