The United Kingdom Alliance estimates that the United Kingdom in 1909 expended £155,162,485 on alcohol. Increased taxation ha*> added five millions to tho cost ; therefore the decrease in the consumption for the year is equivalent to eleven millions sterling. Great Britain's drink bill for 1908 totalled £161,060,482, as compared with £167,016,200 in 1907. In 1908 the average expenditure per head was £3 12s 3Jd, and per family of live persons £18 Is 6sd, compared with £3 15s 9d per head and £18 18s 9d per family in 1907. Taking increased population into account, the decreased expenditure was equarto £7,529,913.
