PERSONAL MATTERS.

The Hon. D. Buddo, Minister of In-lei-nal Affairs, returned to Wellington this morning. Mr. Knvvett, ex-captain of volunteers •t Auckland, arrived in Wellington from the North on Thursday, and left for Napier this morning. At the lequest of a number of members of Educations Boards, Sir Robert Stout will be a candidate for a seat on the Victoria Council in place of Dr. Findlay, resigned. Sir Robert was chairman of the council prior to his visit to tho Old Country. Mr. John Clark, P.P.G.M., Auckland District Oddfellows, who has just been elected Deputy Grandmaster of the Order in New Zealand, arrived* in 'Wellington to-day from Napier, where the bien'«ial Movable Committee^ Manchester [Unity, sat this week. Mr. H. C. Tewsley has been elected president of the Wellington Chamber 'of Commerce, and Mr. Geo. Wilson vice-president. At a meeting of the i council yesterday, Mr. R. E. Sinclair, manager of Messrs Thompson, Fraser, Ramsay, and Co., was elected a member >of the* chamber. Mr. J. J. Casey, who was shipping clerk for Messrs. Sargood, Son, and "Ewen at Wellington for about twelve years, has left the firm's service- in order to start business on his own account in this city. On behalf of the employees, Mr. H. C. Tewsley, the loc«l manager, presented Mr. Casey with a gold watch, and wished him success ir his new sphere. Mr. A. J. Rossiter, of the Wellington District Crown Lands Office, who has been appointed to the position of Receiver of Land Revenue at New Prymouth, was presented yesterday by his colleagues with * silver tea-service on a *dlver-mounted «nd inscribed oak-tray, together with a case of silver spoons. Mr. James Mackenzie, Commissioner of Crown Lands^ made the presentation, while complimentary references to the recipient were made by Messrs. T. G. Weight (Receiver of Land Revenue), W. C. SmitJi (Chief Draughtsman), and George Wright (Chief Clerk). Mr. Rossiter suitably acknowledged tne gifts. The president of the Hibernian Conference (Mr. P. J. Nerheny, of Auckland), was warmly congratulated by his fellow delegates last evening on the success he recently achieved at the election of a new Hospital aud Charitable Aid Board for the Northern city. Mr. Nerheny topped tho poll. Reference was also made to the prominent part Mr. Nerheny had taken in municipal affairs. In acknowledging the compliments paid him, Mr. Nerheny said he had always endeavoured to do his best in any pontion to which he had been elected by his fellow citizens. His success ni. tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board election was particularly gratifying to him, inasmuch as he had been informed by certain persons when he declined to participate in a certain agitation connected with a certain person in Auckland that his chances of election would be seriously prejudiced in consequence. It- is worthy of note that his chance was prejudice*? to the extent that he headed the poll, 247 votes ahead of the next highest successful candidate. Mr. E. J. Harrison, New Zealand manager for Renter's Telegram Co., Ltd., intends leaving for England on z. six months' holiday, and has booked his passage by the Manuka, sailing in May. During his absence Mr. G. E. Baker will assume control of the company's pffairs. Mr. and Mrs. Baker arrived from Melbourne by the Warrimoo on Thursday, and are staying at the Grand Hotel.'
