" FIRE TRODDERS."

No more significant sign of the decay of the great paganisms of the past could be found than this — that their ancient mysteries no longer inspire, as of old, awe among their devotees. The firewalking rite — which scientific authorities first denied and then tried to explain away — was once wrapped in profound mystery, and treated with profound reverence. Now, among the Hindoos, as among the Fijians, it seems to have degenerated into a mere show. Such, at any rate, is the conclusion to be drawn from th-3 following advertisement in a Natal paper, as dated 10th February last :—: — j 'Hindoo Temple, Umbilo. — The third ! -annual fire-trodding festival commences j to-morrow, Friday, 11th inst. Ccre.mony will take place every evening at 6 o'clock until the 19th inst. On Sunday, the 20th, the Fire Tsodders will leave the Umhlatuzan River at 12 noon, ! and will trod in the fire, opposite the Temple, at about 3 p.m. Those wrho intend^ to trod in the fire can do so at j their own risk. All Hindu brothers are kindly requested to attend. — S S Pather, Trustee."
