"I have not been in Wellington very long, your Worship, but the drink seems to have hurt me very quick," urged James Neville in extenuation of a cliaige I of intemperance brought against him in the Magistrate's Court to-day. A fine of J 10s was inflicted by Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M. The option was 48 hours' imprisonment. A prohibited person named Michael Connolly charged with drunkenness and with procuring liquor,, denied the allegations. After hearing police evidence the Magistrate said that he was convinced of accused's lapse, and that a j month's seciusibn would be fitting punishment. Accused was accordingly sentenced to one month's imprisonment ior insobriety, and for the second offence he was fined £2, in default 14 days' imprisonment. Three first offending inebriates vitre also dealt with. A Chinese named Wong Lee, appearing on remand, was charged with using his premises, No. 48, Haining-street, during last January, as a common gaming house. Accused was further remanded till the 29th inst., pending the hearing of another case in the Supreme Court. Before Mr. T. Bland, J.P., at the Mount Cook police Court, George Leech , was fined 10s, .or 48 hours' imprisonment | for drunkenness. One first offender was similarly, fined, and another was convicted and discharged. Terren M'Allear, for drunkenness was sentenced to 14 j days' imprisonment.
