CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The fr ~I meeting of the Wellington and Wnu-aiapa Charitable Aid Board was held to-day. Present : Messrs R. C. Kirk (chairman), W. H. Morrph, M. Welsh, and J. J. Devine. The chairman stated that the meeting had been called in order to lay before the board the final statement of accounts so far as they could be made out from the estimates and figures available. The statement of receipts and expenditure for the past year showed : — Receipts : Balance brought forward from the previous year, £748 6s Id ; amounts received from local bodies, £5930 12s 5d ; subsidies from Government, £7149 6s lid : recoveries for maintenance of children in schools, £827 18s Id ; donations, £11 ; interest on trust account, £6 15s ; total, £14,673 18s 6d. Expenditure : Wellington Benevolent Trustees, £4500; Wairarapa North Benevolent Trustees, £600; Victoria Home, £1800; maintenance of children in industrial schools under Education Department, £3748 18s 7d ; children in private orphanages, £735 4s lOd ; charitable aid disbursed by local bodies, £2189 3s 3d ; adoption fees, £4 14s ; administrative expenses, £157 14s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £957 14s id. The statement of assets and liabilities showed that at the end of the year the liabilities exceeded the assets by £382 13s Id. The chairman said although the expenditure this year was £14,673, compared with £14,600 last year, £1800 appeared on the accounts for the first time this year for the Victoria Home. This wa* under a judgment of the court. -Mr. Devine thought tne financial results of the year's operations werp very satisfactory. The chairman was of opinion that it would be found that the new board •would take up its work Vith a fair start financially. .ur Devine, alluding to an item in the balance-sheet, said he knew that in some cases the boarded-out children were worked far too hard — they were made regular drudges. Ihe chairman said the department's Jady inspector visited the private homes wheie children were boarded out, and did good work in that respect. Before the meeting terminated, the chairman said he desired to return thanks to the members of the board for the hearty support they had always given him. In proposing a vote of thanks to the Chairman, Mr. Welch said that Mr. Kirk had been connected with hospital and charitable aid work for many year*. The people of Wellington really did Bot know the splendid service that gentleman had rendered the community. Mr. .Morrah, in seconding the motion, thoroughly endorsed Mr. Welch's remarks Mr. Kirk suitably acknowledged the yote of thanks. A vote of thanks was also accorded to Mr. Willis, secretary of the board, all the members bearing testimony to the efficient manner in which ho bad discharged his duties. I
