[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CARE OF THE TEETH.

DENTAL ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE. DUNEDIN, 29th March. The sixth annual meeting of the New Zealand Dental Association will be opened here to-morrow. The delegates were acorded a civic reception in the Town Hall to-night, about fifty persons being present. After the dek-gates had been welcomed by the Mayor, the president of the association (Mr. T. A. Hunter) delivered the presidential addresf, the subject being the "duty of the State and the public towards the prevention of dental disease." In the course of his remarks, he said at least four-fifths of the people in the Dominion are suffering in a greater or less degree from dental disease, the prevalence of which constituted one of the most nioet, if not the most, insidious forms of disease that tapped vitality. The speaker went on to refer to the assistance that could be rendered by the. medical profession in minimi-sing dental disease, and also advocated that the authorities should have an organised examination and efficient treatment of the mouths of the children in the public schools. By this intervention the health of the people would be enhanced, happiness increased, calls on charitable institutions lessened, and the taxpayer relieved of yearly increasing burdens. In conclusion, Mr. Hunter paid a compliment to the members of the- dental profession for their efforts to bring about an improvement in the condition of affairs. Dr. Barnett, in proposing a vote of thanks to Mr. Hunter, congratulated the Dental Association on tho position it had reached in New Zealand. The medical profession appreciated the way m which the dentists were carrying oat ' their important work for the good of humanity. SURVEY OF AUCKLAND HARBOUR, AUCKLAND. 29th March. The Auckland Harbour Board hat received a communication from the Secretary for Marine to the effect that Vice-Admiral Poore has advised the department that he has forwarded to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty a copy of the communication addressed to him on the subject of the j earrey of Rangitoto Channel, and that , he had also strongly recommended to their Lordships that thii survey should be carried out, or that a complete resurvey should be made of Auckland Harbour and its approaches by the surveying officers of the Admiralty. MISCELLANEOUS. AUCKLAND, 29th March. I Messrs. L. D. Nathan and ■ Co. have received tho following cablegram from the Governor of Fiji, dated 25th March : "Suva, and we fear very much the ' Fiji group, experienced severe hurricane last night. The extent of the damage is unknown, but it it believed to be serious, though it is not likely to affect I the prosperity of Fiji eventually. No lives are yet reported lost." PALMERSTON N., 29th March. One hundred Northern Mormons, including several missionaries from Utah and their Maori disciples, are in Palmerston to-night, en route to » conference at Grey town, where the representatives of 5000 Mormons will gather.
