♦- After a brief frown this morning, and a little more serions malevolence, expressed in a drift of rain, the skies lelented, and the holiday-makers were allowed to go abroad gaily in large battalions. The city streets had a few stay-at-home "punters," bu'* generally had a very deserted air. The excur- i siomsts had an ample choice of distractions in and out of thj city. The tram conductors, electricLight workers, and' other toilers have tire pleasant consciousness that their leisuied friends have had bright hours for their rambles through fields and groves, and along the sea-shore and over | the uplands. The weather is miserable for the holiday. It was drizzling with rain all night* and there is a thick mist over the City to-day. DUNEDIN, This Day. The weather is glorious for the holiday. The principal attractions are the Taieri races and the lawn tennis championships.

The New York World publiskes a remarkable interview with Mr. Andrew D. White, the "octogenarian sage of Ithaca" (New York), who denounces in striking lerms the maladministration of the criminal law in America. When h« relinquished the post of Ambassador at Berlin eight years ago, Mr. White began a systematic investigation of the immunity enjoyed by murderers in the United States. The fruit of his investigations the former president of the Cornell University now sums up in the words : "It is safer to kill a man in the United States than to kill a deer."' "As we sit here to-day," Mr. White solemnly obaerved, "I will make a prophecy. It is now 28th January. I say in all sincerity and with profound regret that before the 28th of next January 5000 men and women in the United States will have been murdered." The sympathy which criminals enjoy in this country is such that the savant i-arcastkally suggested that the State should purchase the Waldorf Astoria or *oine other hotel in New York, confine all the murderers in it. and "dine and wine" them until they die of gouU.
