MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

On Saturday evening three police constables in plain clothes had to deal \ ♦.h a rowdy quartette outside the Royal Oak Hotel. Some bad language was used,- and two offenders who appeared before Mr. W. R. Haselden to-day incited another to resist the police when | they were endeavouring to effect an j arrest. The result was that Walter , Hatful was fined 20s for using bad language, Walter Donnelly and James Gilooly were fined a similar sum for inciting Charles Hy. Latham to resist the police, the latter in turn being fined ! 'JBI for assaulting one of the constables. Claude William .Illingwortb and Frank ' Linbloro had an altercation in Courte- I nay-place on Saturday night, which ended' in a free fight. Shortly after both I had time to reflect in the interior of ! a police cell. Illingworth was bailed out early on Sunday morning, but the other man had to wait till to-day before he regained his liberty. Both pleaded guilty to a charge of causing a breach of the jpeace, and both, were convicted and discharged. Illingworth stated that Lindblom had kissed a little girl whom he (Lindblom) did not know. The girl commenced to cry. Illingworth asked what was the trouble, remonstrated with Lindblom, and ultimately, he said, was obliged to defend himself witfo his fists. i A charge of being an idle and dis- j orderly person, preferred against William Baker, who was found sleeping in a shed in Farish-street last nighf , was dismissed. Alfred Burnicle, charged with the theft of 20s, the property of A. B. Suckling, was remanded till Friday next. Frank Kerwin was also remanded till Friday on a charge of the theft of an oilooat, valued at 21s, and belonging tt> Alfred Leach. Henry Charles Adolphus Williamson, alias Paul Henry Mercier, pleaded guilty to stealing £3 15s, the property of James Poole Goodman, at Wellington, on Bth November last. He was also charged ■with obtaining £6 by means of false pretences from John Hurley at PalmerstO'i North on the 18th June, 1908. ChiefDetective Broberg stated that other charges were pending against accused. He wa» remanded till 4th April. Ernest Philip Berlyn, charged with failing to account for £36, the property of Frederick Herbert Labatt, was remanded to appear at Christchurch tomorrow mornuig. The court proceedings included the usual procession of holiday "drunks." Elizabeth Kemptou, Charles Harvey, and James Collingwood were- the only previous offenders, and they were fined varying sums. At the Mount Cook Police Court today, before Mr. T. S. Lambert, J.P., four first offending inebriates, who had each been bailed out for 10s, did not appear, and forfeited their bail. James Marr, for drunkenness in Cuba-street, was mulcted in the sum of 10s, with the option of forty-eight hours in gaol. Henry Asbudy pleaded guilty to a charge of insobriety in Taranaki-street, for which he was fined ss. Patrick M'Carthy, charged with drunkenness in Northstreet, was given a chance to leave the city by train to-day to resume his work. If he does not do so he is to be arrested again and brought up for sentence. Another inteniperate person, a first offender, was convicted and discharged.
