EASTER DEMAND FOR FRUIT. Business was quiet in Ihe fruit and vegetable market on Saturday, Eastor demands having been fairly well satisfied. Big lines of apples anrl'peais fiom the Motucka district, which arrived by boats reaching port too late for Thursday's sale, were disposed of at fairly satisfactory rates. The market is, however, somewhat weak, owing to heavy supplies during the pntt week. Dessert pears are scarce. ' Australian grapes, not arriving generally in firstclass condition, realised small prices. Island oranges arc wanted, as the next supply is jiot duo until 11th April. Bananas are scarce, and none are due until 31st inst. Pineapples are also in short supply. For plums there is a good demand, and peaches are not now ko plentiful. For quinces there is a poo^ demand. Supplies of tomatoes are still heavy. Sydney persimmons brought 4s to 5s a ea.«e. In their combined report Laery and 'Co., Townsend and Paul, Thompson Bros., and George Thomas and Co. state, with regard to vegetables^ that whilst tho majority of lines are selling at a fairly satisfactory level, owing to scarcity of really choice lines of cauliflowers, high prices are ruling for same. Both onions and potatoes continue in heavy supply, particularly the latter, and nominal rates are obtaining. The egg market shows an improvement on the rates of last week ; at the same time, supplies are. well up to requirements. Whilst heavier quantities of butter have come forward, the values do not -show any alteration over laat week. Special price* for apples are :— Choice Cox orange, 6s to 7s, prime 5s to 5s 6d ; Jonathans., choice 4s 6d to 56, prime, 3s to 4s ; brown russets, 4s ; Epps seedlings^3« to 3s 6d; Five -Crowa pippins, 3s to & 6d ; Cambridge pippins,., 3s to 3s 6d ; Cleopatra, 3s to- 4s; Munros' favourite, j3s to 3s 6d ; Glory of the South, 3s 3r to 3s 6d ; Reinette de Canada, 3s to 3s 6d.
