i • SERVICES IN THE CHURCHES. Services were held in various city churches yesterday. At St. "Paul's Pro-Cathedral a threehour service was held, at which the Rev. H. A. Kennedy, ono of the forerunners of the General Mission, delivered a series of short addresses on "Words from the Cross." Usual fcervices were held at the other Anglican churches. Services in tho Roman Catholic Basilica bogan ut 9 o'clock, when his Grace Archbishop Redwood pontificated, having as his deacon the Itev. Father Peoples, and as sub-deacon the Rev. Father Hickson. Father Herbert acted as master of the ceromonieH. The service consisted of the unveiling of the Crucifix, the Adoration of tho Cross, and the celebration of the Mass of the Pre-6auctified. In the afternoon the service of the Stations of the Cross took place. Hi» v Grace Archbishop Redwood presided, attended by Father Herbert. His Grace also presided in the evening at the office of Tenebrae. Special services were held at St. Joseph s, in Buc-kle-street, and St. Anne'i*, in New town. Rev. Dr. Gibb pleached to n largo congregation at St. John's yesterday morning. Tho preacher spoke feelingly on the lessons that could be deduced from the bad unniveisaiy nurkod by the day. The Rev. W. Shirer, of St. James's Church, held special Kerviie* at Island Bay at 11 a.m., an I at tit James's Church at 7 p.m. yesterday. The subject of the mornings bervice was "The Gospel of the Cross." aud in the evening '"Lesions fiom the New Grave in the Garden." There was a large congregation at St. Hilda's Church, Inland Bay, at evenpong Uiht evening, when the choir, under the Lonductorship of Mr. F. J. ■ Proctor, tendered Staint-r's Passion Cantath, "The Crucifixion." Tho toloists were Messrs. Caltanach, Jensen, and Hood, and the quartette (imoccompanied) was sung by Mrs. Colley. Mi«* Colley. M*»«.sn«. Roue, and 0. E. Pioctor, all of whom, together with the choir, gave tin excellent rendering of the cantata. Mr L'uher presided at the organ.
