Rowing (By "Scull.")
Next Saturday (2nd April), the ArnstWhelch match will take place. The race is for the championship of tho world and £300 a side, and is to be rowed at Akaroa. That Whelch will row a great race thero is not the slightest doubt, but Arnst is such an exceptionally clever hand with the sculls, and such a demon for work, that one thinks those qualities will place him in a position to withstand anything the challenger is capable of serving up. Though quick, alert, and gritty, Whelch, in my opinion, is hardly strong enough to bo quito in the running with giants like the champion; but in point of accuracy iv tho fino features of tho gamo ho is second to none. Tho 6.5. Maori has been chartered to convey visitors from Lyttelton to tho race, and, given a fine day, Akaroa should present a very busy pictur*. STAR BOATING CLUB. Mr. H. S. Barron, whoso wedding takes _ place at Dunedin next Wedneeday, is very much esteemed in rowing circles, for since he joined the Star Club in 1902 ho has worked hard and beneficially in its interests. Mr. Barren has served on several of tho club's committees, and as a mark of the respect in which ho is regarded by fellow-mombers, tho business on Wednesday evoning opened with, a presentation of silver, oufclery, and a glass decanter. In the absonce of Mr. C. Pearce (captain), Mr. F. Hume (de-puty-captain) made the presentation. In doing_ so, ho wishod Mr. Barron the heartiest success, for no ono has more deservedly oarned a "bumper" than Mr. Barron. _ Mr. A. H. Barnott, a prominent official, also spolce. The early part of tho week was taken UP j W *k° M'Loan and Bethuno fours, and »onior and juuior »iuglo «oulling races. Results:— Firat heat: W. S. Wheelor (stroko), F. N. Aborcrombie (3), A. G. Millington (2), and N. A. Robieson (bow), defeated P. R. Stanscll (stroke), H. Lawson (3), R. B. Cotton (2), ?"*» Armst (bow) by two lengths. C. Tir 03 ( strokp )- H. H. Dean (3), E. W. M'Whae (2), and W. F. Jacobson (bow) also started. Tho three boats got away rery nicely, but after gaining an advantage when the raco had boon in progress tlvrco minutes, Whcelei's orew assumed that victory could be gained without much effort. The rough state of tho water made accurate, rowing difficult Second heat: F. S. Turnbull (stroke), J. C. A. Dudley (3), B. W Beaumont (2), and R. H. Newbold (bow) defeated A. D. Bayfield (stroke), P. V Hackworth (3), C. G. Robinson (2), W." S. Lsderholm (bow), and T. H. C. BedCS rd . ("£ rok «). A. M. Lawson (3), A. M. Hall (2), ? nd K. Wardrop (bow). It was a battle well worth witnessing, and tho successful crew fully deserved tho victory. Thero were occasions when the ■winners wero threatened by Bedford's crew, but the finishing efforts lacked real | sting. Bayfield came away with his customary hard finish, and caught Bedford, | Tn ' k'ii'T' lj to ory socond best when lurnbull dashed out. Final heat : There was vory little in the meeting of Wheoler and Turnbull's crews for tho spectators to onthuse ! about. Up to a certain point the crews wero evenly matched, but a little extra ! foroefulness near the finish line gained | Turnbull (stroke), Dudley (3), Beaumont (2), and Newbold (bow) tho verdict by a good length. Turnbull did his best work after ho found that ho could outpace his opponents. Dudley, Beaumont, and iMewbold rowed strongly and determinedly to the fimsh. 8. Cowles (stroke), J. r•♦ ?? w! /t 8 {^' ,R, R - A1 P° W. and R- RRitchie (bow) also rowed in this heat. Senjpr i Sculls.— First heat: J. Bennett started in rare stylo, and W. C. Harrington was soon busy. An exciting enoounter ended in a win for the former by two lengths. A fino display by Bennett was tho chief feature of the r«ce. Junior Sculls.— First heat: .J. R Cowles put up a fine performance by defeating N. A. Robioson by three lengths. If he only acu]l3 with such keenness m tho final heat ncsi week ho will havo no reason to foel ashamed of his * ?^ y « n6n 6 ? 0 ?* 1 heat: H - H - Dea n detcated K. Ritchie by some smart sculling but owing to the latter being uncomfortably boated, tho former has consented to nave tho race re-rowed. WELLINGTON ROWING CLUB. H. M'Kinley (stroke) and Donovan (bow) annexed the- club's double sculls, attor a fast and interesting race.
