Wellington Senior and Junior Champion■hips, Wellington, at Easter. Easter tennis is now in full swing, and players generally are anxious to give a good account of themselves in tho last tournaments of the season. Tho ladies are striving herd to keep in the front rank, a* a Now Zealand team will more than likely be 6elected about Christmas to compete against the Australian ladies. Quite a number of the local men have flitted abroad, somo North, to Wanganui and Hamilton ; othtfb to Ohristchurch, Dunedin, and Blenheim. Tho Wellington championships (senior and junior) will attract attention, but it is a great pity that some of tho beet men players hayo not entered. There must be some reason, and the soon?r it is found out and an attempt m«dc to remedy it the better for the local tournament. Tho Wanganui tournament promises to bo a real good one. Threo hundred and nino entries havo been received, t» follow: — Men's singles championship, 41; men's doubles. 2b p*i"t ; ladien' singles, 14 ; ladies' double*, 8 pair* ; combined, 19 pairs. Tho handicap* have also fihed well:— Men's tingles, 39; B Grade, 37; ladies' singles, 34; men's doubles, 39 pairs; ladies' doubles, 17 pairs; combined, 35 pairs Last year tho total entries were 214, and naturally the committee is well pleased with the splendid support given to thi* year's meeting by players. Tho matches will be played on court* hud out at Cook's Gardens. , Cliff Dickio is expected to win hi ■ingles, and, with Powdrell, the doubles. Miv Cavo should fight out with Miss Hughes, of Pahiatua, the final of the ladies* singles. Miss Powdrell and Mrs. Jones look good enough for the doubles, but in the combined Miss Powdrell and Powdrell will havo to go very hard to beat Miss Nevill and Dickie. Tho Taranaki t<am that waa beaten by Auckland spent a pleasant time in the sunny northern city. A most enjoyable harbour oxcursion waa one of the tre*ts. Tho losers inis*ed Mrs. Payne badly, and a« victcry was slipping away from thorn, regretted that the little champion wm not thero to assist. . Had she been present *ho would have ju»t about turned tho tables. Tho tournament at Palmerrton fcorth was a most successful one, both from a playing and financial point of view. About £20 will be on hand after all expenses ar» paid Prouse wa» in great form, and when h» beat Lieut. Stow, of tho Pegasus, it w*« clearly seen that he would give Fisher a great run. Ho beat Stow 9—4 ; tho latter played a fine volleying game, but Prouso's driving was too much for him. In tho semi-final Prouso played oven better, and won 9—4 from Fisher. Tho courts were a shade heavy aft-or tho rain of tho day before, and Fi*hcr did 1 not *eem to get going at all ; probably owing to the slippery nature of the turf. Mis* Hartgill, of Dannevirke, met Mr*. Payne in tho final, and » great match resulted in a win for tho former player, 12—10. The weather was lovely, and the courts were dry and played well. The winner was not to bo worn down by tho Taranaki player. Sho ju«t won, and no more. Fisher (scr.) won the handicap single*. Proune wa» receiving 8 points, but went out to, Graham (33) ia the firut round, 60—52. Fisher and Prouse won the doubles chwnpionehip comfortably. Stow and Collins gave them most trouble, but the former pair won. 6—6. In tho singlet championship Cecil Adams was beaten by Fwher, fl— s. Th« play was the bent seen in Paltnerston. North nnoe the New Zealand championship* were decided thorn in Uft9. An exciting match for the championship was played last Saturday between Newtown and Brougham Hill Pennant team*. Brougham Hill won threo out of the first four matches played, but Newtown took tho next two, making tho score "3 all." Then each won a match, and when the deciding ono between Thwaitea, of Nowtown, and Edworda was put on, the score was "4 all." Thwaitei quickly led hi* opponent B—6,8 — 6, and it looked all over, but the Brougham Hill player made a plucky rally and brought the score to "8 all." The last gamo went to "deuce," and Thwaitee, amidst great excitement, ju*t managed to score the next two stroke*, which gave him gamo and match, and aleo gave hu club the win in matches 5 to 4, which result makes the Newtown Club the winners of the pennant championship. The captain of the losing team called for threo cheers for Newtown, which were heartily given, and the winners returned the compliment. The final of tho Thorndon championship was won by Swanston for tho third titna in succession. He has each year accounted for Fisher in tho 6emi-tinal, and then Peacock in tho final. The match between Swanston and Peacock was a very good one for a time, and when Swanstou led 2—l,2 — 1, it looked as though both players were just coming to their tip-top form, and that a desperate finish would be the result; but a misty rain crept up, bang went somo strings in Peacock's racket, and — well, it was all over. Peacock, after the accident, used a racket not suited to him, and he simply lashed at everything. Swanston won the first set, then Peacock took nino games in succession, but Swanston stepped in and led 5—45 — 4 in the th.ird set. It was at this stage that, wanting an ace to make it "5 all," Peacock smashed a ball, which should hnwe won him the point. Out it went, and he was left with a damaged racket in bis hand, and Swanston had tho championship in his pocket. When leading 2—l2 — 1 Swanston proposed to adjourn, bat hie opponent would not hear of it. Had the players been "two all" when the rain came on possibly both would have agreed to play it over again. With both of these players fit and well, there is little between them, but Swanston has the advantage in temperament. It is to be hoped that both will go to the Now Zealand championships of 1910 in tho best of form. The final of tho Newtown Club* championship singles between Nagle and Lowis will more than likely bo played off immediately after Easter. The first-named should win. TOURNAMENT IN WELLINGTON.. PROVINCIAL MATCHES. WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION. The Easter tournament of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association commenced yesterday. The weather conditions were excellent. The Senior Championships were played on the Thorndon courts and the Junior at Brougham Hill. There was a fair gathering of spectators, and play on the whole was interesting. In the mni'is singles (Senior), Swanston will be almost certain to meet Cox in the final, and make a great content of it. Brown and Proose will probably meet Cox and Swanston in the final of the men's doubles. Miss Nunneley and Miss Travcrs ore "the likely opponents for tho final of the ladies' single*. Miss Nunneley and William* will alto matt probably meet { tither MifA..Travert, and &i«l £laxcfa*at

or Miss Holmes and Miss Batham. There wa>. no play in the combined doubles yesterday. / In the Junior men's singles semi-finals Wright will meet J. B. Parker, and EHcr meet Jones.
