TWO WOMEN ASSAULTED.
FOUR MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. FOR THE ASSAILANT. There were two charges, against David Bates, who appeared on remand in the Magistrate's Court to-day. The allegations were that he assaulted Elizabeth Dowsett and Margaret Sheehan, the latter to such an extent as to cause her actual bodily harm. Sub-Inspector Norwood prosecuted and accused was represented by Mr. Meredith. , Evidence was given by informant Sheehan that she and accused had had an altercation, and on the morning of the 30th November, the latter ca. . home [ the worse for drink. Ho went to bed, and later in the day goo up to go out again. Informant enquire where he was going. Accused replied that it was none of her business, and followed up this remark by striking her in the face and I kicking her. He picked up a table knife, snapped the blade on his knee, and then attacked informant with.it. Blows and cuts, were directed at various parts of her I body. Informant was rendered unconscious. She was afterwards attended to by Elisabeth Dowsett and then conveyed to the hospital, whence she was discharged only this morning. Elizabeth Dowsett stated that she received two bruised eyes, inflicted by accused, while attending to Margaret Sheehan. Medical evidence was given that th© injuries suffered by Margaret Siieehan were not of a permanent nature. After hearing the evidence, the alagis trate (Mr. Riddell) allowed the mcie serious assault charge to be reGucci *o one of aggravated assault on a iem'ale In submitting a plea of guilty on each information, eounsal urged Lh.it accused had been on a drinking bout, and was not at the time responsible for his actions. For assaulting Elizabeth Dowsett, accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and for the eacond and graver offence he was sentenced to four months* imprisonment. The terms were made concurrent.
