GAS EXPLOSION IN CHRISTCHURCH.
CONSIDERABLE SENSATION. [BY TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, 11th September. A loud explosion in Messrs. P. Hayman and Co.'s warehouse caused a considerable sensation in Hereford-street about 9 o'clock this morning. It appears that when Mr. Hayman entered the shop he noticed a strong smell of gas. On opening the strong-room door the smell became more pronounced, and Mr. Hayman_ struck ar match to investigate. Almost immediately a terrific report occurred, and a sheet of flame momentarily enveloped Mr. Hayman. He was thrown violently backward, but luckily was not rendered unconscious. His face and hands were rather badly burned, and he sustained n, very severe shock. Some idea of the force of the explosion may be obtained from the fact that the back door of the warehouse, which is about twelve feet away from the strongroom, was shattered into fragments, and a new door will have to be put in. About five feet in front of the strong-room i& a showcase, which was badly scorched by the sheet of flame.
