RESOLUTION OF THANKFULNESS.

Tho following motion \vai moved by Dr. Gibb at to-day's meeting of the Wellington Presbytery: —"That the Presbytery of Wellington desires to unite with the world in commemorating the 400 th anniversary of the birth of Calvin. They recognise in him a man to whom the Presbyterian Church owes much of what is formative iri its theology and distinctive in its polity. Tho times have changed, the mental atmosphere of history differs greatly from that of Europe in the 16th century, and the Church is no longer so sure that logic will satisfactorily solve all theological problems, or reunite in an. intelligent synthesis the sovereignty of God, and the freedom of the human will. But the Presbytery thankfully affirm their profound conviction that the theology and the ecclesiastical polity of Calvin were the supreme desideratum of the churches of the western reformation at a momentous epoch of their history. Without tho inspiration of Calvin's conception of the Divine sovereignty, and of the one increasing purpose of God in human history • without hi* guidance and counsel frooly given as they fought their long and bitter fight with superstition, they could not 'have witnessed their good confession, nor stood firm in tho evil day. They rendered a service to the cause of pure religion, freeing it jn the lands now called Protestant from the corruption of a church which had become as salt that has lofit its savour; they rendered a no less signal service to the cause of the pohtjcal # enfranchisement of the people, delivering them from tho yoke and bondage of tyrannical king*, and rulers. The Presbytery blesses God for the man who put the iron into their blood and strengthened them for their mighty task, whoso successful accomplishment has secured for us the liberty which is now our invaluable possession." The Rev. J. K. Elliott seconded tho motion, which was adopted unanimously
