DISCUSSION AT THE HOSPITAL BOARD. LOCAL WORKS WANTED.

A brief discussion took place at the meeting of the Hospital Trustees to-day. Members agreed that a considerable amount of excavating work for the fever hospital could be done with advantage at the present time. Works of a similar character are required on a site at Sala-manca-road. A proposal was recently made, to the effect that the trustees

should spend up to £25 on excavation work. The meeting empowered the chairman (the Hon. C. M. Luke) and Mr. R. C. Kivk to confer with the Unemployment Committee, and make what arrangements were deemed necessary to put the work in hand. It was suggested by Mr. Kirk that the Minister in charge of hospitals (the Hon. Geo. Fowlds) should be requested to make an advance of money, which the board will Be entitled to receive from the Government by way of subsidy at a later date. This, he said, would enable the scheme to be put in hand more expeditiously. Mr. Gco. Nash, who introduced the question, also suggested • that an' endeavour should be made to have the Wadestown and Karori roads improved. M present, one portion* of the Karcri-road was dangerous for * raffle. The local bodies were all takirg the unemployed difficulty into consideration- now, and he believed that if it was known that needed works in different localities were to be carried out the public would contribute more liberally. In the case of the Wadestown-road, he guaranteed to collect £100 in a week if the work was put in hand by the local authority. Personally, he would contribute £10. Mr. Luke said this was, of course, outside the jurisdiction of the trustees, but he had no doubt Mr. Kirk would bring what Mr. Nash had said under the notice of the Unemployed Committee. Mr. Kirk undertook to do so, and suggested that Mr. Nash should attend the next meeting of the committee, and agree to act as one of the members of that committee.
