A bii&c camp was established on a' knoll near the city boundary. lleie the Brooklyn putiols furnished the defending and observing force, and its mem*bers bu.sied themselves in Vrerting a. glass hut-shelter, and keeping a look-out on the surrounding country, which was supposed to be infested with bunds of hostile scouts from Wellington and lloseneath. A special signalling and search expedition was entrusted to the Tuatara troop, who, besides engaging in military scouting, searched for remains of moa egg-shells, of which they found some fifty fragments. The attack was frustrated in the main, the chief ftcout (Dr. MnkgLll) alone succeeding in piercing the litifcß. The repulse practically ended the day'fl opeiations. The scouts Ihen disbanded.
