AN APPEAL BY REV. J. J. NORTH.

At the Vivian-stieet Baptist Church last night, tho Uev. J. J. North made an appeal for help for those suffering from htck of employment. The parable 'of the Good Samaiitan was, he said, a lightning sketch of the right way to troafc tho question of human need and human poverty. If society would*-fol-low that teaching tho golden year •would be brought near. There was some Hopeless poverty in Wellington, some that never got its head up and never expected to. There was also a very great deal of hidden poverty j them Were many men who were ashamed to show their want. There were many minor tragedies, petty economies, and "stealthy visits to the shop with the three golden 'balls. There was nlso some loud-voiced poverty, bawling of the rights of raa'i, and suggesting what made an Englishman shiver down his back — revolution. The poverty that existed was a protest against crooked customs and evils that were very great. There ought* to be no poverty in such a country as this, which could grow food and clothing enough for twenty or thirty times its present population. A. great deal of the present trouble was caused by the bad construction of the social system. Men who worked hard with "their hands had often no possibility of rising to independence, while men of much less worth lived :n: n ptiluces. The cure ol' social t ills lay along the Hue of personal service to one's follow-nlan. As the congioga-tion left the church a collection was taken up. It amounted to £21 16s Id, and will bo handed to Ihe Citizens' Fund tor the relief of the unemployed.
