COMPROMISE AGREED TO. HEAVY INCREASE IN CUSTOMS. By Telegraph .--Press Association.— Copyright. BERLIN, 9th July. In connection with the German Imperial finance proposals — which aim at providing new taxation equal to £25,000,000 per annum, the taxes for which caused, a breach in the ConservativeLiberal 810c — a compromise has been arranged which indicates that the Agrarians and Protectionists have retained a tight grip on the machinery of taxation. Under the compromise the required £25.000,000 per annum will be raised in the following proportions from the several groups of taxes :—: — £ Duties on beer, spirit I*,1 *, tobacco, matches, lighting apparatus wine, and coffee ... 16,000,000 A tax on railway tickets, maintenance of the pugar tnx, and increase of tho matricular contributions . . 4,000,000 Duties 011 various articles of import, on storks and shares and on financial tran^ac 1 lion? ... 5,000,000 Total £25,000,000 The matricnlar contributions (i.e. contributions by Slates to the Federal Government, assessed according to population at a rate per head fixed annually by the Imperial Budget) will be increased to 80 pfennigs (about lOd) per head of population, unconditionally.
