SOME WANTS OF HUTT VALLEY RESIDENTS.
« BROUGHT BEFORE THE MINISTER. ' Air. Wilford, M.P., besought the Minister for Railways last night to have a shelter shed for passengers erected at Melling's siding, m the Hutt Valley, iHid also to have a plank for passengers put over a cattle stop in the vicinity. The Minister agreed to havo the plank of Mr. Wilford's political l platform attended to, but he expressed a belief that if a shelter shed was piife up the department would be pestered, almost immediately, with requests to have the place declared a station. Ha considered it was too close to the Hutt station to permit of that being done. Mr. Wilford suggested that the shelter shed could be put up on a specific condition that the place would not be de» clared a station. The Minister said he would consider that suggestion. 'Hie need for more accommodation on the workers' trains was another matter mentioned ■ by Mr. Wilford, who said the lack of it was disgraceful, and that "a football scrum was nothing to the struggle that was necessary occasionally." He asked the Minister to go thoroughly into this matter, and give a reply at a later date. Another matter which Mr. Wilford asked the Minister to consider was the advisableness of. acquiring the Hutb Park private railway line. He spoke of the scheme to have the mouth of the Hutt River deepened, and the fact that there was much residential land of good quality along the line ; beautiful land that was bringing in little or no return just now. He did not know what prico was put on the railway to-day, but even at the £4000 asked for it some four years ago it would be a good bargain for the State, he thought. Finally, Mr. Wilford had something to say about the advisableness of getting the mail trnin to pass the other trains at llayward's, or at Silverstream — instead of keeping them waiting, nearer Wellington, for the lengthy intervals that were frequently experienced. ■ The Minister undertook to give carer ful consideration to the suggestions.
