The Hon. D. Buddo will leave for the South this evening. Constable M. Madden is gazetted police gaoler at Wanganui. The Hon. T. Mackenzie returned from the Auckland district yesterday afternoon. Mr. G. H. Cates has been appointed deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths at Petone. Mr. Richard Cock, of New Plymouth, arrived in Wellington last night from the North. Colonel Robin, Chief of the General Staff, returned yesterday from an official visit to Auckland. Mr. G. E. Owen has been appointed to a position in the veterinary branch of the Department of Agriculture. The Hawkes Bay Presbytery yesterday sustained the caH of the Waipawa charge to the Rev. J. Gunn, of Mangaweka. Mr. J. E. Smith, tne newiy-appointed Resident Commissioner at the Cook Islands is gazetted a Justice of the Peace. Mr. E. Bamford is gazetted RegistrarGeneral of Land for New Zealand, and District Land Registrar, Registrar of Deeds, and Examiner of Titles for the Wellington district.' Mr. T. W. Kirk, the Government Biologist, returned from 'Nelson yesterday morning, and left a few hours afterwards for the A. and P. show at Hamilton. The Revs. O. Fitzgerald, E. E. S. Forrester, and O. J. Kimberley (Church of England), and Messrs. S. Cottell and W. A. Porter (Methodist) are gazetted officiating ministers under the Marriage Act. The resignation of Councillor Cooper, who is leaving for Wanganui, was accepted with regret at last night's meeting of the Miramar Borough Council. His services as councillor during the past 18 months were recorded in the minutes of the council. The secretary of the Institute of New Zealand Engineers (Mr. A. R. Hislop) has been elected an Honourable Companion of the Institute of Marine Engineers of Great Britain, as a mark of its appreciation of his valuable service to the marine-engineering community. The employees of Messrs. Sargood, Son, and .Ewen, met last evening to say good-bye to 'Mr. F. Rasey, tho firm's late 'West Coast traveller, who is leaving by the iMoana to-day to take charge of the International Correspondence Schools Agency in Melbourne. Mr. 'Austin, in making a presentation on behalf of the employees, spoke highly of Mr. Raeey's abilities, and said Lhey all wished him sucsess in his new venture. Mr. Rasey replied suitably, after which three hearty cheers were given by those assembled. A private cablegram from London notifies that Mr. John T. 'Mair (late of the New Zealand Railways 'Architectural Department), who is now in London, has passed tho final examination for the A.R.1.8.A. 'Mr. Mair has for the past three years been studying his profession at the University of Pennsylvania, America. His success at the various university examinations earned for him special commendation from the' professors. After touring Great Britain, and visiting various places of interest on the Continent, 'Mr. 'Mair intends returning to New Zealand in October next, and will practice his profession in this city. CVTr. Quertier, of 'Malaura, a member of the Society of Friends, enjoys the unique distinction of being one of the most southerly Quakers, in the world. He is a very old colonist,, having come out from his native place, Guernsey, in the Channel Islands, in. charge of the first cattle from that place, which were brought to 'New Zealand 49 years ago. It was 22 years before he met a Quaker in New Zealand. Mr. Quertier, in conversation with an Ensign representative, made- the interesting statement that Lieutenant 'Shackleton, of Antarctica fame, also comes from Quaker stock, and is related to tho family in -Dublin, who are well-known for their interest in the brotherhood.
