THE GAS MAINS DISPUTE.
A COMPROMISE PROBABLE. Another conference between the Gas i Committee of the City Council, and the representatives of the Wellington Gas Company was held this morning, to disuuss the matter of disagreement over the j tompany's dpsire to run gas mains to the city, from the company's new reservoir Bt Miramar, through what was Melrose Ward. Incidental to the protracted negotiations and conferences that have Been held in the last three months, proposals to municipalise the gasworks or to convey to the company the rights over M#lrose streets, which were acquired by the City Council under the original Greater Wellington agreement between itself and the late Melrose Borough Council were gone into, but it is understood that neither of these proposals was adopted. This morning's conference, however, advanced matters to a stage at which a mutually satisfactory settlement of the long-standing difficulty is within measurable distance.
