BURGLARIES.

CIIRISTCHURCH, Bth July. It is stated that a number of premises in Christchurch were burglariously entered last night, although the thieves got little satisfaction for their enterprise. Two offices situated in Glouces-ter-street were ransacked at a late hour. The burglars evidently gained admission with skeleton keys, and proceeding to the office of Mr. H. L. Friend, ihey picked the lock of the door and went through the premises. Fortunately the local manager banked late in the afternoon, and the only reward the thieves got was a small amount of loose silver irom a drawer. Mr. Leonard Blake's office opposite was next ransacked, and the drawers were forced open, but the thieves came away empty, as nothing of value had been left in the office. It is understood that other premises were also entered. PROPOSED PRISON FARM: INVERCARGILL, Bth July. The Borough Council to-night resolved at ii special meeting to request the M.P. for Invercargill to communicate with the Government on a scheme for reclamation on the foreshore of a new river harbour on both sides of the estuary, with the object of a scheme being entered into with the Government for carrying out the work by prison labour, the Government in consideration to receive out of the reclaimed land an area for a prison farm. It was decided that Dr. Fmdlay be invited to visit Invercargill and discuss the scheme. NEW WATER POWER REGULATIONS. HOKITIKA, Bth July. The Rimu Miners' Association is asking tbe various local bodies on the West Coast to co-operate in presenting a monster petition to Parliament asjeing for alterations in the new water power regulations as applied j:o waste water, lhe majority of the papers in Westland urge that the Minister should immediately visit the district in reference to the matter, which it is contended is of the utmost importance to the West Coast. The conditions will be posted to every headmaster in the course of a few days. MR. HOGG SPEAKS AT WANGA- . NUI. ' WANGANUI, Bth July. Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.P., addressed a public meeting this evening. A fairly large audience gave him a good hearing, and carried a motion expressing the opinion that in resigning his position as Minister, in deference to his convictions, Mr. Hogg acted in a manner worthy of the highest eyinmendation.
