[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND DRAINAGE WORKS
AUCKLAND, Bth July. The first instalment of -£100,000 of th--Auckland City and Suburban Drainage Board's loan has been received and lodged in the bank to the credit of the board's account. The engineer (Mr W. E. Bush) is busy preparing the plans for the first portions of the work to be undertaken, and expects to place those for at least two sections of tho work before the board at its next meeting on the 28th instant. It has already bi-en decided that operations shall rt.insnpn^e with the Arch Hill Gully, and the second contract let will be lor the outfall therefrom. It is anticipated that w u'jin six months both contracts will be in progress, and that at the end of twelve months the drainage scheme wil 1 be in full swing if matters go smoothly. Another portion of the loan will probably be required in eighteen months' lime. The first two contracts should be let in a comparatively short time, and as they will involve the employment of a considerable number of men, with more to follow as the various works progress, the undertaking has an important hearing towards the present unemployed question. On the Arch Hill Gully a)'d outfall sections alone an expenditure of between £30,000 and £40,000 is enr.uled.
