COST OF EDUCATION.
MINISTER'S REMARKS 'REFERRED , - TO. [BY. TELEGBAPH— SPECIAL TO THE POST.] MASTEHTON, This Day. At a meeting of the Masterton SchooJ Committee, held last evening, the chairman drew attention to a speech recently delivered by the Minister for Education, in which he stated that the cost of secular education was becoming too heavy a burden, and the question would have to be considered whether the people should not be compelled to contribute a proportion of the cost. The chairman of the committee stated that Mich a statement, coining from the 'Minister for Education, undoubtedly had ' something behind it, and in all probability local bodies would be called upon tj contribute a portion of the money required for educational purposes. If so, it meant the death of the present system and the growth of denominationaJism. School committees throughout New Zealand should, at an early stage, enter a vigorous protest against any interference with the present educational conditions.
