o The Yorkshire Society of New Zealand met' last evening, in Godber's Rooms. I\lr. J. H. Helliwell occupying the chair. There was a fair attendance; of membeis. The chief busine&a of the evening vas a debate on compulsory military training. Mr. Mall aihrmed and Mr. Bedford repiehented the negative, Mr. Wiicox supporting. iitessns. Bevan, Ilanii, Bell, Ross, Carter, and Marshall took part in the discussion which resulted in a motion in favour of compulsory training by a two to one major- j ity. Two new members were elected to I the society.
Pegi. are in the ground to mark the ! course of the tramway extension from Kiibirnie to Lyell Bay (Maranui), and it is likely that a recommendation will be made by the Tramways Committee to nsxt meeting of. the City Council that the work be proceeded with at once. Mr. John Henry Taylor, dyer, > died at his residence, Grant-road, at 6 o'clock this morning. The deceased, who was 57 years of age, came to New Zealand from Australia, and lived in various parts of New Zealand before he settled iii Wellington, eleven years ago. He had been in bad health for some time, but had only been confined to his bed since -Monday last. He has left it widow and a family of three sons (Messrs. Charles. Bert, and John Taylor) and tvo married daughters, one oi whom is the wife of Mr. R. Dockery, ot tfee Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operartlve Association, Wellington. The other daughter is Mrs. J. D. Bridsco, of ITjpier. The late Mr. Taylor, who was born in Worcester, England, and had Been in the colonies for 35 years, was severely burned through an explosion of benzine on his premises on.Lambtonquay about two years ago, and never got 'over the effects of the injuries.
