THE SPIRIT OF COMPROMISE, By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. SYDNEY, This Day. The special correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, writing from London, refers to the speech delivered on the second day of the Imperial Press Conference by Sir Edward Grey (Secretary for Foreign Affairs) as a most tactful deliverance. j Touching .on the question of press criticism, the Foreign Secretary said : " Within the Empire let our criticism of each other be always that criticism which makes clear that it takes no pleasure in finding fault. I would deprecate vqry much any idea that the Foreign Office is more ready to compromise with foreign countries where the interests of the colonies are concerned. Though now and then the self-governing dominions beyond the seas may think that in some settlement with a foreign country the British Foreign Office has not been stiff enough in upholding British interests, if we were to exact the extreme letter and once hold that we ought to get everything which we claim, the British Empire would become impossible. I do not mean for a moment that we should give up what we have got. You will find in every part of the world that our interests are so great that when any changes are in prospect we are to have the greatest shaie."

« [Bl" TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GREYMOUTH, 7th July. " A latal accident occurred at Blackball this afternoon, whereby a young man, James Median, 30 years of age, was killed. It appears that deceased was working at Hie Blackball Company's siding, blasting rocks, and was tamping a shot, when it exploded, practically blaw--ing his head off. Deceased was. a single man, and resided with his parents at Blackball. CHRISTCHURCH, 7th July.
