TELEPHONE CHARGES. FEDERAL GOVERN EN T'S DECISION.

The Federal Cabinet has decided to discard the telephone system adopted by the late Government, and to revert to the old system, which allows 2000 free calls. The Postmaster-General , in the late Labour Ministry (Mr. Thomas), on the ground that the telephone service was not paying, decided to alter the present system of a fixed charge per telephone to an annual rent-charge and an extra halfpenny for each call Strenuous opposition to~the change was made by the business community. li< was estimated in Melbourne that the new plan would involve an increabed payment ranging from 100 t,o 250 per cent., and bearing extremely hard on small users. Sir John Quick, 'on succeeding Mr. Thomas as Postmaster-General, promised that no change would be made until both sides of the question had been thoroughly jjone into,, and the opinions of State officials had been obtained.
