The vast discrepancy between the ( number of football enthusiasts and that of volunteers was the subject of a tellkig plea for compulsory training by Captain Petheriok, at last night's smoke concert of the D Battery. He said that the sight of a large crowd who merely look on, or jeer, at a football match always made him think of the few who can be found to join the ranks of the defence force, and constituted, in his opinion, a justification for compulsory training. He referred to a class of onlookers at volunteer parades, who merely jeer at the military uniforms and their wearers. Amid vociferous applause, Captain Petherick stated that such loafers were in a very short time to be compelled to wear the very uniforms that were the object of their con- % tempt— and he thanked Gpd for the promise -h»vrsfw-in tho future.
