LONDON MARKETS.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. Tho Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the Higli Commissioner, dated London, 15th May:---The mutton market is dull, being oversupplied with heavy carcases of mutton. A poor demand continues. Canterbury light weight is quoted at 3|d per lb ; heavy weight, 2jd ; North Island, light weight, 2£d por lb ; heavy weight, 2id per lb. The lamb market is steady and low prices ure increasing the output. Canterbury is quoted at 4|d per lb, and North Island at 4id per lb. Heavy weight is selling at about 3ad per lb. The beef market ia firm, and the deman is chiefly for hinds. New Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3id per lb, and iorequai-ters at 2id per lb. The butter market is firm, with more enquiry, and th&re is a better demand. Choicest New Zealand is quoted at 101s ; Danish, 112s; Siberian, 935; Australian, 98s. The cheese market is firm, with an upward tendency. Supplies are running short, and there is a general and active demand. New Zealand white is quoted at -645; coloured. 665. The hemp market is v*>ry quiet, being affected by increasin arrivals from Manila. Tliereis little demand. New Zealand good fair on spot, £23 per ton; New Zealand fair grade on spot, £21 15s ; fair current Manila, on spot, ££21 ss; May-July shipments New Zealand good fair, £22 15s per topi New Zealand fairs grade £21 10s; fair current Manila, £19 15s. The Manila output is 27,000 bales. There is no pressure to -jell cocksfoot seed. The market i o quiet, but holders are firm, at last quotations (755). The wheat market is rather unsettled, and there has been a gradual decline, bat tho market is now firm, owing to reduced supplies. A good demand continues, with no change in prices. New Zealand long-berried wheat on spot, exgranary, per quarter of 4961b5, 45s 6d ; New Zealand short-berried wheat on spot, eK granary, per quarter of 4961b5. 44e 6d. Beans — N.Z. old crop, f.a.q., per 504ll)s, 35e 6d. Peas— New . Zealand patrndge, per 5041b5, 47s 6d. There has been no material change in tho market. The wool market remains firm. Bradford top 6 are quoted as follows: — 36's low crossbretls, Is; 40's, low crosshreds, Is Id, 44's. medium, Is 2d; 50's, halfbreds, Is 6Jd; 56's. quarter-breds, Is lOd ; GO's, merinos, 2<i 3d. - — *
